It was an evening of reflection, celebration, and envisioning the future as we kicked off the SEL Exchange and commemorated CASEL’s 30th anniversary by honoring the remarkable journey of advancing social and emotional learning over the past three decades—both the successes and struggles—and igniting a shared vision for the future of the field in a thoughtful conversation between CASEL President & CEO Aaliyah A. Samuel, CASEL co-founder Timothy Shriver, former CASEL President & CEO Karen Niemi, and Board Member Emeritus Linda Darling-Hammond.
Social, emotional, and cognitive development are deeply intertwined and key to academic learning and success. But how can we effectively integrate SEL with academic instruction to accelerate learning so that students don’t just recover, but thrive?
Our opening plenary delved into what the true integration of SEL and academics looks like, sounds like, and feels like based on the latest research and implementation. In this riveting panel, multi-disciplinary experts offered practical insights and leadership strategies for deep integration of SEL into core content areas and across educational settings.
Speakers include Dr. Gholdy Muhammad from University of Illinois Chicago, Kevin Dykema from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufman from the University of Virginia, moderated by Dr. Michael Strambler of Yale University.
We closed out the 2024 Exchange with a look toward the future. In an increasingly digital, connected, and fast-paced world, the skills for success are ever-changing but deeply human. Education, business, and policy leaders brought their expertise together to create a new vision for how we prepare future-ready students.

CASEL celebrated 7 SEL champions by awarding the “Social and Emotional Learning Leaders of the Year” (the SELLYs).
CASEL believes that great movements are built on collaboration with others to produce the richest insights, biggest impacts, and best outcomes in support of children, so we use the Exchange as an opportunity to recognize individuals whose body of work and commitment to SEL have advanced the field and paved the way for others.
